SOUNDBITE (English) Christopher Darcy, Retired Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Undersheriff,  Police Practices Consultant:"Well, first off, it's a horrific crime, right? It's a horrific incident. It's hard to watch. However, I think it's important to recognize that we need to take a look at what information the officers had at the time they made their approach and their plan to contact them. I don't know that yet. I listened to the 911 call and in the 911 call, there seemed to be some cues and some information and some confusion initially, I think, on the part of the 911 operator." This gentleman just came into the house, and he wants to wait here for my wife to come home, and so, anyway, he's told me to put the phone down." (Operator): Do you know who the person is? "No, I don't know who he is. He has this leash on me. He told me not to do anything."ASSOCIATED PRESSLas Vegas - 27 January 20235. SOUNDBITE (English) Christopher Darcy, Retired Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Undersheriff,  Police Practices Consultant:"But I'm not sure what was actually relayed to the officers and what was in their mind as they approached the door. The video is shocking and you can clearly see the hammer in the suspect's hand. So that immediately will raise the suspicion of the police officers. But the attack happened in a rather quick fashion. And as you said, you know, whether you're going to say it's 14 or 20 seconds, there is some judgment that needs to be made. And in hindsight, it's always easy to go back and criticize the officer. But often it's deeper than that. It's information that was known to them with them, what they were aware of as they were approaching the house. And that type of information that they're processing as they make their decision." ++ENDS ON SOUNDBITE++  STORYLINE:A police use of force expert says it will be important to determine what information police officers had when they arrived at the home of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi last October to find a man about to attack Pelosi's husband with a hammer.Retired Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Undersheriff Christopher Darcy said the 911 operator who took a the call from Paul Pelosi likely had a suspicion that something was wrong."But I'm not sure what was actually relayed to the officers and what was in their mind as they approached the door," he said.Newly released video shows the husband of former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi fighting for control of a hammer with his assailant during an attack in the couple's San Francisco home last year. The footage was released Friday after a coalition of news agencies, including The Associated Press, sought access to evidence prosecutors played in court during a preliminary hearing last month. The San Francisco District Attorney's Office had refused to make it available to journalists. The evidence includes portions of Paul Pelosi's 911 call, as well as images from Capitol police surveillance cameras, a body camera worn by one of the responding police officers and a recording from the suspect's police interview. David DePape has pleaded not guilty in separate state and federal cases.===========================================================Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: info@aparchive.com(ii) they should check with the applicable collecting society in their Territory regarding the clearance of any sound recording or performance included within the AP Television News service (iii) they have editorial responsibility for the use of all and any content included within the AP Television News service and for libel, privacy, compliance and third party rights applicable to their Territory.
