You have to be a citizen born in the country but you don't have to be a bigot and you don't have to be a racist. And certainly, we don't have to choose people like that to be our president." STORYLINE: House Democrats urged their Republican colleagues to join them in voting on a resolution condemning President Donald Trump's tweets that urged four Democratic congresswomen of color to return to their countries. "This resolution is not actually about President Trump, we know who he is," said Rep. Tom Malinowski of New Jersey. "Our Republican colleagues know who he is. The only question that has not been resolved is Who are we in this body. We will get to decide that tonight." The four-page resolution traces the country's history of welcoming immigrants from colonial times and includes an entire page of quotes from Republican President Ronald Reagan. Reagan said in 1989, during his final days in office, that if the U.S. shut its door to new arrivals, "our leadership in the world would soon be lost." "We Are America. America is a nation of immigrants," said Rep. Ted Lieu of California" "We are not going anywhere. America is our home. And many of us will still be standing here long after the occupant of the Oval Office leaves." Democrats were hoping the resolution would put Republican lawmakers on the spot and would win some GOP votes. Top Republicans were urging their GOP colleagues to stand against the language, and it was unclear if any would defect. "The president is the one position where you do have to be... a citizen born in the country," said Rep. Jamie Raskin of Maryland. "But you don't have to be a bigot and you don't have to be a racist. And certainly, we don't have to choose people like that to be our president." =========================================================== Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: info@aparchive.com(ii) they should check with the applicable collecting society in their Territory regarding the clearance of any sound recording or performance included within the AP Television News service (iii) they have editorial responsibility for the use of all and any content included within the AP Television News service and for libel, privacy, compliance and third party rights applicable to their Territory.
