SOUNDBITE (English) Anthony Marrone, Los Angeles County Fire Department Chief:"The true heroes stand behind me today, that 78 member USA Team Two. I think we've all seen the social media posts of the international search and rescue teams digging people out of the rubble while aftershocks occur and additional buildings collapse. So these men and women and these dogs of the L.A. County Fire Department are really going to go place themselves in harm's way to save lives, to dig people out and to help with the recovery. So it's going to be a very dangerous mission. They're prepared. They're trained. They're only, there's only two international rescue teams in the United States. It's USA Two that stands behind me today and USA One in Fairfax County, Virginia."3. SOUNDBITE (English) Anthony Marrone, Los Angeles County Fire Department Chief:"They trained as paramedics, they trained as rescue specialists. They trained right up at our very own Del Valle Regional Training Center up in Santa Clarita. They trained tunneling, lifting heavy objects, getting concrete off the people, having the dogs that you see behind me today are live find dogs. So they're trained to find live people under rubble so we can pinpoint our rescue efforts to make sure that we're able to pull those people out. We've all seen after other disasters like Mexico City, the earthquakes in Nepal, sometimes two, three, four, five days later, we're going to be pulling people that are alive out of the rubble. And that's what these men and women are going to do behind me once they make it to Turkey."STORYLINE:The Los Angeles County Fire Department's Urban Search and Rescue team is preparing to travel to Turkey after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake and multiple aftershocks struck eastern Turkey and neighboring Syria, killing more than 5,000.L.A. Fire Chief Anthony Marrone said that there are two search and rescue teams in the country that are qualified to be sent out of the country: this Los Angeles County team and a team based in Fairfax County, Virginia. The United States Agency for International Development, also known as USAID, is coordinating the mission, with the team heading to Turkey on a U.S. Department of Defense aircraft. The rescue team includes firefighters and structural engineers. Its 78 members have training in tunneling, lifting heavy objects and getting concrete off the people. They are also going with six search dogs. The dogs are "trained to find live people under rubble so we can pinpoint our rescue efforts to make sure that we're able to pull those people out," Marrone said, adding that during other disasters, people have been pulled out of rubble days after the initial disaster.===========================================================Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: info@aparchive.com(ii) they should check with the applicable collecting society in their Territory regarding the clearance of any sound recording or performance included within the AP Television News service (iii) they have editorial responsibility for the use of all and any content included within the AP Television News service and for libel, privacy, compliance and third party rights applicable to their Territory.
