Wide shot of President Joe Biden walking up to podium2. SOUNDBITE (English) Joe Biden, U.S. President:"Just this morning we got some very good news about the American economy. Every three months the economic outlook of America is laid out in an official report, a government report on the state of the economy. It came out today, this morning, and I'm not sure the news could've been any better. Economic growth is up, stronger than experts expected at 2.9% and growing. Jobs, jobs are the highest number, highest in American history. Wages are up and they're growing faster than inflation. Over the past six months inflation has gone down every month and God willing will continue to do that."++WHITE FLASH++3. SOUNDBITE (English) Joe Biden, U.S. President:"I don't think it's unfair to say that this is all evidence that the Biden economic plan because of you all is actually working, it's working, it really is."++WHITE FLASH++4. SOUNDBITE (English) Joe Biden, U.S. President:"Last summer, plenty of Wall Street analysts were saying that by the end of the year, there would be a recession. They've been telling me since I got elected there would be a recession. Every time we've gone, we've gotten better. Well it turns out thank God, they were wrong. So there's another group, the House Republican leadership. As I've said it's not your father's Republican party, it's a different breed of cat. I call them extreme MAGA Republicans. Not all Republicans are there but a distinct minority of 30-40% of them. As I've said, they seem to be determined to be the party of chaos and catastrophe."++WHITE FLASH++5. SOUNDBITE (English) Joe Biden, U.S. President:"Like many Americans, I was disappointed to see the first bill the House, new House of Representatives passed along party lines added $114 billion to the deficit, reducing taxes on the wealthy. They campaigned on inflation, they didn't say if elected, they planned to make it worse."++WHITE FLASH++6. SOUNDBITE (English) Joe Biden, U.S. President:"And the very notion that we would default on the safest, most respected debt in the world is mind-boggling. I'm not going to get into the reckless threats and take the economy hostage in order to force an agenda that's going to only limit American workers and weaken us internationally. I won't let that happen."STORYLINE:President Joe Biden touted the government's better than expected economic report Thursday, insisting the numbers are proof his economic plan "is working.""Just this morning we got some very good news about the American economy," Biden said during a speech in Springfield, Virginia. "Every three months the economic outlook of America is laid out in an official report, a government report...and I'm not sure the news could've been any better," he said. The report showed the U.S. economy expanded at a 2.9% annual pace from October through December, ending 2022 with momentum despite the pressure of high interest rates and widespread fears of a looming recession. The resilience of the U.S. job market has also been a major surprise. Last year, employers added 4.5 million jobs, second only to the 6.7 million that were added in 2021 in government records going back to 1940. And last month’s unemployment rate, 3.5%, matched a 53-year low.Biden said while "we've got more work to do," the risk of a recession appears to be fading."Last summer, plenty of Wall Street analysts were saying that by the end of the year, there would be a recession," Biden said. "Well it turns out thank God, they were wrong."But many analysts believe the U.S. economy is not out of the danger zone yet.The good times for America’s workers aren’t likely to last. The Fed is expected to raise interest rates again next week.  And as higher rates make borrowing and spending increasingly expensive across the economy, many consumers will spend less and employers will likely hire less.===========================================================Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: info@aparchive.com(ii) they should check with the applicable collecting society in their Territory regarding the clearance of any sound recording or performance included within the AP Television News service (iii) they have editorial responsibility for the use of all and any content included within the AP Television News service and for libel, privacy, compliance and third party rights applicable to their Territory.
