Your underlying physiological state and age, your ability to sustain yourself as long as possible without fluids, nutrition and electrolytes. And then your durability and your mental capacity and toughness. The hope that someone is going to get to you, I think can, can, can provide you one, two or three more days."ANNOTATION: Key factors include underlying medical conditions; traumatic injuries from earthquake; physiological state and age; ability to sustain self without fluids, nutrition; mental state and durabilityASSOCIATED PRESSKahramanmaras, Turkey - 7 February 20236. There's a couple of ways to look at it. One is the hope that they can save somebody. And I think that that is probably still maybe five to 7 to 10 days away. But then I think you switch into a period where I just want you to be able to find the loved one. I just want to be able to touch them and say goodbye and have some closure."ASSOCIATED PRESSJindires, Syria - 7 February 202310. Boy sitting by bodies of his family who died in earthquake11. Truck transports bodiesSTORYLINE:A devastating earthquake Monday in Syria and Turkey and its aftershocks have raised questions about how long people can survive in the rubble.  Experts say up to a week or more, though it depends on their injuries, how they are trapped and weather conditions.Age, physical and mental condition are all critical."You see a lot of different scenarios where we've had some some really miraculous saves and people have survived under horrible conditions," said Dr. Christopher Colwell, an emergency medicine specialist at the University of California at San Francisco. He added: "They they tend to be younger people and and have been fortunate enough to find either a pocket in the rubble or some way to access needed elements like air and water."People with traumatic injuries, including crush injuries and limb amputations, face the most critical survival window, said Dr. George Chiampas, an emergency medicine specialist at Northwestern University's Feinberg medical school. Mental state can also affect survival. Chiampas notes people trapped next to bodies, who have no contact with other survivors or rescuers, may give up hope."The hope that someone is going to get to you, I think can provide you one, two or three more days," he said.Amid freezing temperatures, search teams from over two dozen countries have joined tens of thousands of local emergency personnel to continue to look for victims from the earthquakes that have killed more than 11,000. Wintry conditions in Syria and Turkey have hampered rescue efforts."If all of a sudden they start having rain, that rain in addition to cold weather can accelerate that hypothermia and can also lead to an accelerated death," Chiampas said. Most rescues occur in the first 24 hours after a disaster. After that, survival chances drop as each day passes.Still, Chiampas says he would "never discourage anyone from having hope."___The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute's Science and Educational Media Group.
