The announcement on Saturday reversed an earlier statement that the unit would remain intact.Police Chief Cerelyn "CJ" Davis said she listened to Nichols' relatives, community leaders and uninvolved officers in making the decision.Davis told The Associated Press on Friday that she did not feel like the unit was "a bad unit." Started in 2021, the unit is composed of three teams of about 30 officers who target violent offenders in areas beset by high crime."We had the highest numbers in homicides in 2021 that the city has ever had," said Davis.
