SOUNDBITE (English) Dermont Shea, New York Police Commissioner:"A member of the community did what we asked them to do. Got involved. Called 911, gave a pretty detailed description of an individual, stating that this individual was at that location and had a firearm. You have police officers in uniform from the 48th precinct that respond, everything is captured on body camera, as they're walking up they're discussing tactically how they will approach. And they immediately encounter this individual who is sitting on the front stoop of the building. Within seconds, they are in a gun battle. You have the female police officer, that has approximately one year with the force, is immediately struck in the right arm in this section right here. She eventually is shot twice in that area. She returns fire, we believe, five times, striking the assailant. Her partner, when they immediately approached the individual, before the shots are fired, gives verbal instructions to take his hands out of his pocket and immediately the gun comes out in the shot to stop start."2. SOUNDBITE (English) Dermont Shea, New York Police Commissioner:"We have two police officers that are shot, we expect them to make a recovery. They're in stable condition."++COMMISSIONER SHEA SPEAKS AS HE REACHES INTO BAG, PULLS OUT WOUNDED OFFICER'S SHIRT++3. Here's his duty shirt (shows it to media). Here is the bullet hole. That enters in his right armpit area. And he's sitting in a hospital bed right now. The bullet comes out his left chest, within inches, obviously, of a much different outcome."4 . SOUNDBITE (English) Dermont Shea, New York Police Commissioner:"We have the perpetrator who is struck, we believe, three times. He went into surgery in this very same hospital. He's out of surgery and we believe he is going to survive."++CAMERA ZOOMS OUT AS OFFICER HOLDS UP PICTURE OF FIREARM RECOVERED AT THE SHOOTING SCENE++5. SOUNDBITE (English) Dermont Shea, New York Police Commissioner:++CAMERA ZOOMS OUT AS OFFICER HOLDS UP PICTURE OF FIREARM RECOVERED AT THE SHOOTING SCENE++"It's a firearm. What we know about this firearm is that it was reported stolen last year in Georgia. Obviously made its way as many, far too many guns do up into New York City, and it's causing carnage on the streets."STORYLINE:Two New York police officers were shot and wounded and another was hit by a car in separate incidents on Wednesday night that sent all three to area hospitals. Two officers responded to a 911 call reporting a suspect with a gun on Beaumont Avenue in New York City's Bronx borough (county) around 8 p.m., Police Commissioner Dermot Shea said in a news conference on Wednesday.Shea said one female officer and one male officer arrived and the suspect immediately began firing at them. The female officer was shot twice and returned fire, hitting the shooter, Shea said. The male officer was also shot after struggling with the suspect over the weapon. Both officers, who are also military veterans, are expected to make a full recovery, Shea said. The shooter was taken to the hospital, underwent surgery and is also expected to recover, police said. Shea spoke at St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx, where he said both officers and the suspect were taken. He held up the male officer's shirt to show where the officer was struck. "Here is the bullet hole. That enters in his right armpit area. And he's sitting in a hospital bed right now. The bullet comes out his left chest, within inches, obviously, of a much different outcome."Shea said the recovered gun was reported stolen last year in Georgia. An officer held up a picture of the firearm."What we know about this firearm is that it was reported stolen last year in Georgia. Obviously made its way as many, far too many guns do up into New York City, and it's causing carnage on the streets," Shea told reporters.Earlier, around 6:30 p.m. near Farragut Road in the Canarsie section of the city's Brooklyn borough, an officer suffered a leg injury after getting hit by a car, authorities said. The officer was taken to the hospital, and authorities said he was in stable condition.===========================================================Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: info@aparchive.com(ii) they should check with the applicable collecting society in their Territory regarding the clearance of any sound recording or performance included within the AP Television News service (iii) they have editorial responsibility for the use of all and any content included within the AP Television News service and for libel, privacy, compliance and third party rights applicable to their Territory.
