Here is the history of how the Canadian flag came to be. The process of choosing the design of the Canadian Flag began in 1895. But the government of Canada was never called upon to formally vote on the more than 2,600 designs received in 1946. Nearly 20 years later, Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson, in 1964, informed the House of Commons that the government wished to adopt a distinctive national flag. Until the adoption of the present national flag, the Royal Union Jack was the only other official National Flag of Canada.
